I don't know what today was. It was anything but a day off.

Yesterday, Danny got a HDTV box for the downstairs wide screen TV, then took it back, then got another or something. I dunno. I'm confused...he called me at work to see what I thought, but of course I wasn't THERE, so I left any decision in his electronic hands.

Whatever happened, we ended up getting the 24 hour or 2 day or one week or whatever free every-possible-cable-channel, which we only discovered when we were experimenting with the channels when I got home.

So, we snogged onto "Huff," and so far have watched 4 of the season 2 episodes. We had gotten rid of HBO and Showtime and all that a LONG time ago, so this was all heady stuff for us. "Huff" was one of the casualities when we decided that to get rid of that cable expense, although I liked the Season 1 series, and we've been living pretty well without the Premium Cable Channels That Cost A Lot Of Money. I almost started watching the last season of Six Feet Under tonight, but opted not.

Danny seemed fixated on the semi-porn channels they have, which is really bizarre, since he told me 5 years ago he didn't like watching porn. That's perhaps another story to pursue.

Whatever it is, I'm awestruck by the quality of HDTV on the few channels that actually have it.

But today was about the 5 hour "Rapid Mainstream" I had planned back in early January to get the Wilde Bunch new class from Basic 53 to Mainstream 69, all in one long session.

This actually worked out pretty well, after all these months when I originally thought of it. We had 5 of the just-completed Basic class come out for it, and with me and a couple of angels, we had a good square.

After getting an early start printing out lists and definitions at the like, we started just after 10am working through calls 54-69 in Mainstream. I had a whole square of the newer better dancers to work with. It went like clockwork, and I'm pretty sure the retention level will be high. After a pizza lunch, we ended up the list plus 3 review tips at 2:30 and everyone scattered happy and slightly overloaded with square dancing to continue on with their day. I was happy with this, and think I might try it again after the next Basic class that's just starting, Class 62.

Ah, but just as I was about to head out the door this morning, the newest refrigerator turned up, from the local store Baillio's. Danny has done some really intensive online research this past week, and some serious store visits. I didn't actually see it until after I got back in the afternoon, so Danny supervised it's entry into the home. Last night, we have moved the other noisy FRIGIDAIRE in front of the French doors, and rearranged the furniture to accomodate this newer, more costly model. Little did Danny know what was in store for him.

I was all perky coming home from the workshops, and had called Danny from the dance center to see if he needed something. Of course, the sucky phone at ASDC which has had a line crossover problem for 2 years, made it difficult to hear him. I was in for a surprise when I got home... it turns out he didn't go out for the cole slaw he said he was going to pick up. He had a exceptionally good reason. As he was coming back from Best Buy after arranging the pickup of the LOUD fridge, his timing belt went out in the middle of the freeway. It's TERRIBLY suspicious about that, since just yesterday, he had his car serviced, washed, and the air conditioner freon looked after. But AAA came through for him, as did his cell phone. When I came home and saw no car in the garage (which he didn't mention on the crackly phone call earlier), I thought he had gone out, but as soon as I opened the door, he popped upstairs from watching the hyper-TV to fill me in. He's pissed, but his car should be ready on Monday, maybe not in time for his CAT Scan appointments, but I can help him out with that.

Before he had left for Best Buy, he had called to be sure there was no extra charge at all for returning the probably defective fridge, and their toll-free-probably-in-India service center assured him it was a 30 day no questions asked return policy. When he got to the physical store though, it was another thing altogether. The store folk told him there was a restocking charge, since the fridge was being returned "on our whim." Ha. In spite of his freeway near disaster, he got home, phoned the toll-free and after many angry words, they agreed to refund the 'return fee.' They've never messed with Danny before, so they didn't know what a bulldog he is over consumer injustices.

After getting over the shock of what he had gone through, and although I had thought long and hard about going to the Annual ABQ Folk Dance Fest today after I finished up with the workshops, I thought it was best to bag that idea. Kris J is on the board of the ABQ FDF, but time wouldn't allow me to particate this year, so...

Today at 4, the annual NMGMC party kicked off at Ben's house. Keeping in mind I expected a low turnout, we did to a minimum of shopping for this, we took over a bottle of cheap wine, a bag of pretzels, and a tub of store-bought cole slaw. Normally, I'd make something for this thing, but since I didn't sing this term, I felt a little unbonded.

Ben and Marc have a tidy little house they've gayed up about a mile from us, and the turnout was not bad, considering there were only 13 singing members this term.

After most of us had eaten lots (Ben made some great Brats and Burgers) and imbibing a modicum of wine, Ben actually had a business meeting after the sun had gone down enough to make it comfortable. The 10 minute business meeting stretched into an hour, with no problems actually solved, but we made go of it.

The highlight was that Danny had discovered a hummingbird nest just inches away from the deck we were sitting on, and early on the nested hummingbird flitted back and forth, concerned about our being there. Finally, as dark was coming down, it settled in for the night, and fell peacefully to sleep. I've never actually SEEN a hummer nest...it was a beautiful work, something you'd think had fairy dust involved.

Originally, I thought though we could head off to the Civic Plaza downtown tonight for the first of the summerfest programs. Tonight it was Zydeco and Country music night, featuring Cajun dancing, c/w exhibitions by the straight C/W performance team, and also some clogging by the Zia Cloggers...a group I started with in 1984, but ended in 1986 when I thought it was just too straight for me, and decided that me knees wouldn't take it for too many years. But it's fun to watch, and a trip downtown on the Rapid Ride bus sounded good. Oh, well.

After that, I figured we'd head over to the Ranch for a couple hours of C/W dancing, but tonight was a Gay Rodeo pageant of some sort that was to end at 10, so I was ambivalent.

We ended up heading home and watched the lovely pretty pictures on the enhanced TV until it was totally time to crash. And here I am.

This newest fridge is MUCH nicer than the other we had picked out. AND it's quiet. I think we'll be able to live harmoniously for a long, long time.
