Ever have those times when you are so utterly fatigued that the world is floating around inside a cotton candy ball, the words aren't coming out in syllables that sound like they make sense, and you're so tired that you don't want to even TRY to go to sleep?

Tonight's one of those nights, and I know I have a hugely busy two days of the workweek left.  Ugh.

This Callerlab was one of the best for me, but part of that may be from becoming a slightly larger fish in an ever shrinking aquarium.  There were only 172 caller attendees, most with partners, plus invited guests from a bunch of future nationals and the like.   [profile] otterpop58is quite well known among most of the crowd there, both as a caller and as a benefactor.  He did a tremendous job organizing the fundraising auction last night...the last event of the convention before the general meeting.  A cool $10,000 even was raised for the Foundation! * [profile] krisjensenhas a wealth of technical info to share and is well-respected by many there (I didn't see a lot of her this convention!).  I'm greeted warmly by most everyone, which is QUITE different from my first Callerlab in 1985, when there were easily double the participants and I was wet behind the ears and didn't know anyone.  Even Rich Reel and Alan Hirsch are running in their circles there.

Yesterday was a fine day of interest session, schmoozing, and fun events...I had a solid 8 hours of sleep after my death-defying drive to Colorado Springs without much sleep the day before, so I was ready for action.  LAST night, I only got five hours sleep, so although I didn't pass out at the wheel driving home, I was seriously jetlagged from the 5 1/2 hour drive (mapquest.com got it right!) home...each passing minute on the last hour dragged by interminably until I could finally tap the garage door opener and breathe a sigh of relief.   What happened to the days when I could drive 12 hours with just stops for gas and not have it phase me?

But today was the general membership meeting.  Only one real issue came up for a vote...whether to add a "Youth" category to Callerlab membership.  The pros and (very few) cons were debated for what seemed like an excessive time, but it came out on a very positive note.  It turns out the the bulk of the 'old school' callers in the room had started calling when they were teens...a surprise to me.  I figured most everyone started calling at 30 like I did! :-)

Nearly all the folks that are running for the board of governors are "Friends of Friends of Dorothy"...I'm sure I couldn't have said that 20 years ago...it's a sweet morphing that's happened by our positive presence over many years.  Andy and I are both wondering about Jon Jones near-obsessive comments on the microphone (at EVERY meal and meeting) revolving around male 'bonding' jokes and one-liners...what is THAT all about?  The chuckles from the audience seemed slightly forced.

Danny's not feeling well still , but he thinks he'll be better by Sunday.  We're going to plan a games night after we get our other weekend commitments out of the way.

I'll post more about Callerlab, but I'd best try to get to sleep.

Oh and Bear Miller is going to be a grandfather.

* $1,000 of that was from a shocking bid Rich Reel made for a first edition "Cowboy Dances" signed by Lloyd Shaw himself.  I had intended to bid on that, but Rich STARTED the bid at $1,000 and the room was so stunned that he got it without another counter-bid.  I was planning on going up to $100 before I'd drop out, but didn't get the chance!

The pros and (very few) cons were debated for what seemed like an excessive time,

Reminds me of this description of "A committee: a body that keeps minutes and wastes hours."

Some of us think that when Callerlab opened its doors to the general caller community in 1974, that the constant committee work has slowed anything that's important down to a geological crawl.

RR continues to baffle me. :-S

And maybe JJ is getting a little tired of DCJ's relentless femaleness? Just a thought.

Glad you had some fun!
