Dec. 4th, 2005

Yesterday, the weather was abnormally warm for December, so I put on a sweatshirt and jeans and started the annual Raking Of The Leaves at 7:15am. By 11:30, I had 20 bags of leaves, and just since I can't leave well enough alone, had added maybe 20 branches from overgrown junipers to the burgeoning this'll-get-to-the-dump-eventually pile. And there's probably 4 or 5 bags of leaves unraked on the north side, since I ran out of bags. Forget composting...I tried that. It's too dry here for that to happen on it's own, when I dug through a compost pile that I started in 1992 and found leaves that dated from the very first raking experience here on Richmond.

Danny made himself productive by hauling up the Christmas Tree (8' artificial) and the 10 boxes of decorations and bric-a-brac. In the afternoon, we spent a few lovely hours decorating the tree and reliving some of our memories of holidays past, but by 4, I was over doing anything constructive.

I DID have to plow into the square dance center books though, since we had a board meeting today at 2:30, and I was a bit behind in posting it all into QuickBooks.

I napped a lot in the evening. Mmmmm...

Today, I was supposed to go to either a) our chorus singing at the Unitarian Church for 2 sessions, or b) go to a 10:30 square dance seminar, and since I started the bookwork again about 7am this morning and wasn't finished, ditched both of those. As well as the 12:30 square dance callers meeting. I think I might have lost my mind in October and said I'd be on the board, but apparently I was dreaming. Ah well.

I did make the 2:30 square dance center board meeting. Lots of issues to resolve, but I had announced I'd have to leave at 3:50 to make my 4pm chorus sectional. By 3:45 we were just starting to get to some issues to vote on, but one other board member and I ditched. We're going to do email balloting apparently. Kris Jensen is also on the same board, and she spent most of the time apologizing for nothing getting done, which I thought was a bit weird. The big annual meeting is Jan 22, so we'll see how that goes...I'm on for three years, and this first year has been a bit frustrating. The frustration is that the board member who handles contracts doesn't communicate ANYTHING to me about what's booked, and as treasurer it's a bit hard to nail down non-payment when an event happens I don't know about.

Also frustrating was getting to the chorus rehearsal and no one showed, except for me and Brian. Apparently Dan showed up, but no one was there, so he left. Our concerts start on Dec 14, and I'm feeling only about 70% ready.

So I'm home again, and will do my holiday cards instead, sipping a nice Australian merlot. Danny's downstairs, catching up on his Replay TV murder mysteries.

I'm SO happy that Christmas as we know it is totally bound in pagan roots! Even BEFORE "Miracle on 34th Street!"
