Saturday night
Jul. 9th, 2006 08:51 amThe rain was coming down again from yet a 3rd storm cell when we got it together to meet up with Lawrence and Scott at the Vortex to see "Greater Tuna." Neither they nor Danny had ever heard of this show, but I still remember it fondly from maybe 10-12 years ago when I saw it at the Albuquerque Social Club to a full house.
The woman who did the curtain speech noted that the building was leaking like a sieve after that hailstorm, and that if it started leaking over the back 3 rows again, they'd have to shut the show down. Eek! There was a leak over the center of the stage area, and I worried about that.
But the show was as obnoxiously funny as I always remember, and Dean Squibb did his usual flawless job with the 13 or so characters he played, some so well it was scary. The other actor Stirling Morris did an equally good job with all his characters. The only flaw in the show was the timing with costume changes they made, where 1960s-70s country music was played as filler...LONG scene changes that diluted the fun of the show. I don't remember the timing lag from the earlier production I saw...maybe they just used hat, coat, and glasses quickchanges to denote the difference in the characters then. Dean was one of the characters from that earlier production, and he's aging VERY well. Stirling did slip on the puddle in the floor twice toward the end of act II, but caught himself and didn't fall. Lucky.
Was still sprinkling when we left the theatre at 9:45. There was damage all around town from the torrential rains, but this part of town seemed to be the only area where there was hail.
We slept great...I was in bed for 9 hours, and the cool breeze from our fully opened windows felt wonderful...it's still 85% humidity and in the 60s this morning, but bright and sunny...mmmm. Time to feed the birds before they revolt and divebomb the French doors.
