An afternoon at the volcanoes
Nov. 25th, 2007 05:40 pmOn the far west side of Petroglyph National Monument lies the volcanic escarpment that is a feature of the western horizon above Albuquerque. This is my first trip out there, 26 1/2 years after I moved here!
Commanding views of Albuquerque, the Sandias and the Manzanos, Mount Taylor to the west, the Sangre de Cristos to the north, and even A Mountain south near Socorro. Temp, mid 40s and breezy, but out in the open, it felt great. The 2 mile hike we did was envigorating.
rfrench and
cjsmith would have enjoyed this trip; the park is located immediately to the east of Double Eagle II airport. Small planes were infrequently buzzing overhead, but weren't really intrusive at all.

Only a few signs of the snowbursts we had the past couple of days. Other than that, the landscape was almost uniformly brown, except for the occasional juniper at that 5,900 foot elevation.

The next shot is of Double Eagle II airport...a few minutes after this shot, a small plane appeared to be landing on the highway, but the landing was just west of it!

Took a drive through some newly developed areas to the south of there on the way home. Tons of cookie cutter homes stacked nearly one on another for miles and miles. Ack!
