Danny's birthday
Jan. 3rd, 2008 12:43 pmWe had a very low-key celebration of Danny's birthday last night, which just seems appropriate after all the brouhaha of the holiday season.
For the first time, we visited a local vegetarian restaurant...Annapurna. Danny's wanted to go there for quite a while, since they have a large vegan menu and he wouldn't have to worry about his dairy issues.
It's a throwback to the 1970's hippie-style laissez-faire type of dining that I remember from my youth. It's in an 80 year old building fairly near the university. Most of the menu was East India inspired. Lots of rasta-haired caucasians scattered around. You had to squeeze between tables to order at a counter, but the food was VERY good and well-prepared and QUITE filling. The menu advertises that they have their specials until they're gone...and two of the things I wanted to order were gone. I ended up with a Greek wrap; whatever Danny had was unpronouncable, but also filling and tasty. Danny was even able to enjoy a slice of vegan chocolate cake made with Spelt (which we had to look up online when we got home).
Of course, neither of us are vegetarians by far, but not having to grill the staff there for possible milk contamination (can you have butter, sir? how about eggs? are those dairy?) was a blessed relief.
Disappointingly, a gift I had ordered online on 12/14 STILL hadn't arrived by yesterday, so his only gift to open was a pet dog. One of those battery-operated sleeping puppies that breathes quietly and peacefully. It's ultra-adorable...he's taken it to work to keep him company in his new office.
The rest of the evening was just calm and relaxed in front of the TVs...ah, life.
