billeyler: (all eight)
Yes, indeed, Marshall Flippo is sick, sick, sick with the flu.

Thanks to [profile] krisjensen's last minute call-around, there were SEVEN other callers that showed up to fill in.  The west hall was completely full of dancers, many having come from around the state to dance to Marshall.  But each of the callers did a tip (Kris, me, Joey Solis, Rich Stewart, Dale Martin, Art Tangen, and John Lewin), giving them a festive Mainstream and Plus dance.  John hadn't picked up a microphone in 17 years, but he did a creditable job on the fly.  Art Tangen has recently moved back to ABQ and was the local star caller for years here; I'm sure he will be again.

"Petticoat Junction" had set up as the SD vendor and took up a fair portion of the west side of the hall.  I was amazed by the sheer volume of stuff they had brought and set up.  It must have taken them to entire day to put it all together.

Besides Kris and me, the only other Buncher there was Scott Amspoker, who seemed to be having a very good time.  The guy can't get enough of dancing, that's for sure.

During the day, Marshall wasn't scheduled to call (I don't think), so Kris has pulled some of us together to call Advanced in the morning, EZ SD and Plus in the afternoon.  We'll see how this all shakes out.

We're all praying Marshall is somewhat improved tonight, but we're set to do another multi-caller fest anyway.  I think it's very likely we'll be Marshall-less again.   Marshall calls for us every year and HAS for the entire 50 year history of ASDC.  The guy was one of the movers and shakers in the 50s to help get ABQ together this way...he lived in Amarillo at the time and travelled here frequently the 4 hours just to call.

So many old faces were there last night, but I'll bet the hall is completely packed tonight.  Last night was the 'trail's end' dance, not part of the weekend package.
