Thursday night was the second week in a row where I didn't have [personal profile] abqdan's able help for teaching C/W at Sidewinder's, and he was missed.  He'll be through with his Tu/Th five-session PhotoShop class next Tuesday, and I'll be glad to have him back.  The evening went well though, with me workshopping both 4-count Swing and C/W Swing basics as the core program.  I threw in Cotton Eye Joe to get some calories burnt, reviewed "Bayou City Twister," and retaught "Buttons," which was again enthusiastically received.  As usual, we had a few new people during the evening, but the core of 30 or so, plus the 10-15 occasional dancers were there, too.

On Monday, one of the dancers emailed me that he wanted to have a surprise birthday party for his partner right after the dance on Thursday.  Easily omitting his partner Greg from my email list of 120 names, I sent out Alan's flyer to all so it really would be an organized surprise.  The odd part of the night was that another dancer, Marc, had a cake brought in for his boyfriend Joe's birthday.  While we were all celebrating Joe's b/d during the dance, poor Greg was being ignored.  But it all seemed worthwhile when I detained Greg at the end for a dance while everyone gathered in the Wolf Den secretly to celebrate his 26th birthday!  Greg really WAS surprised by this, nearly tearfully so.

Greg and Alan are one of those intriguingly odd matches of couples, but I've stopped wondering about the chemistry of coupledom.  They're at least 20 years apart in age, but in spite of their Mutt and Jeffness, they seem very committed to each other and have been for going on 4 years.  Greg is one of those who fell in love with dancing when he first tried it, Alan, not so much.

Friday night was the monthly "Club" dance for the Wilde Bunch.  It's such a treat for me to just GO to a dance that I hardly know what to do with myself.   Danny opted not to go, since he had his 5:30 massage schedule and he wanted to do the weeks food shopping after that.

Art Tangen called a very respectable Mainstream/Plus dance, with a full A2 tip thrown in.  If discovered, I don't doubt Art would be on the IAGSDC circuit.  He's been calling for something like 30 years and he's just in his mid-40s, and has quite a local following again.  I've been friends with his now-wife Linda for a very long time, having known her from my early days at ACLOA/MTS when she was an enthusiastic c/w dancer and ACLOA board member.  Linda and I danced a couple of tips together and got to chat and catch up a lot.

The venue was in the basement/theatre of an old girls school built in 1925 that's now morphed into an art school and community center.  The basement where we danced was functional for no more than the three squares we had, but the old building itself was an architectural gem from a by-gone era.  It felt very like an old NYC building that had never been functionally renovated.  It had fallen into complete abandon for about 10 years in the late 70s, but rather than to succumb to the wrecking ball, an arts organization saved this classic from oblivion.

Tonight after Danny finishes a workshop, we're sashaying over to Lawrence and Scott's for dinner and a games evening.  Long time since we've been out socially, so this will be a treat.

My tasks today are pretty simple, but hopefully I'll be able to spend a lot of time outdoors, even though I slept in till nearly 9am.  It's supposed to be a delightful cloudless 71 today, 13 degrees ABOVE average.  March is that inconsistent time of the year where it may or may not dip below freezing at night and I'm all hot to get things planted in the garden, but it's a month too early for that!

One chore I'm going to do is compare the list one of the board members put together for the anniversary dance mailing against the 700+ person list Georgian put together for all curent and former WB dancers to see who I know go missed.  I want to send out personal invites to them if they got missed off the big mailing.

Tomorrow is dinner with Orlando and Ivan up in the heights, along with another couple I don't know.  The small world sydrome is fully in effect here; Orlando is married to a woman, but is nearly openly involved with a man.  At one time, the 'the other man' was Lawrence, who we're having dinner with tonight.
