Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
Apr. 27th, 2008 08:17 amThis past January, EM:HE visited Albuquerque for the first time. The Martinez Family benefitted from this teardown/rebuild in the coldest part of the year in one of the most desolate parts of town. This family had a little compound of duplexes and a house where they helped the needy.
We're recording this show tonight on ABC.
I've always been stunned and amazed at what this construction company and a motley crew of 100s of volunteers can do in a mere week. It takes us years to even do about 1/2 of the remodeling at this house that we want to do.
The neighborhood they live in is about 3 1/2 miles east of us. We pass just north of that area every week when we drive to Sidewinders. Back in January, we'd see the street blocked off, tents set up, an entry station to the neighborhood, hollywood-style work lights going all night long. The actual property is at 432 Grove SE; the 'before' pix from last November can be seen on maps.google.com street view. The house had an adobe fence with a cross over the entryway. That cross is now incorporated over the house now from the pix I saw on the EM:HE website.
It's a touching story for this family and I certainly wish them well...they've done a lot to regain control of this failing neighborhood and deserve to have their hard work and kindnesses returned.
