billeyler: (Richmond house)
We've had 1.2 inches of measurable precip so far this year...wheeee! It was 96 today and supposed to be 98 tomorrow, pretty scorching for here. In spite of that, quite a few flowering plants are still putting on a good show, or just starting to...

Day lily...I planted three of these three years ago and this is the first time they've flowered! Here's today's small trophy:

Oleanders aren't a high desert plant, and I've been babying this one against a south-facing hot, sunny corner of the house for the past three years. I was hoping for a large ornamental shrub; it's only about 2 foot tall. I was mostly able to protect it from the hard freezes this past year, so as my reward, this is the first time this has flowered:

One of my garden favorites that keeps coming back year after year with no attention whatsoever, except pruning the coneflowers to the ground every winter:

And last but not least, the new zucchini, planted from seed last week. There are about 16 seedlings so far and I'm praying the bugs don't get them! I'm fighting back mightily the yarrow and other weedy plants from the soaker hose area...they usually overrun that part of the garden.
