Between the 2pm and 8pm performances of "Spelling Bee," we sandwiched in a trip to the East Mountains for a holiday party with friends.

The weather, although pretty breezy, was in the high 50s, quite high for ABQ this time of year. It had been a nice day of small errands and relaxation.

It wasn't without drama though. The 35 minute trip took an hour. I decided to take the freeway route, rather than wind through town to get to I-40. Wrong move. A massive 13,000+ sporting event (women's basketball?) was letting out just down the road. A normally 3 minute 1.5 mile trek to I-25 took 15 minutes with the bumper to bumper traffic, bored looking (and generally non-hunky) policemen directing the slow traffic. We thought we were in the clear when we hit I-25, but ooooh, noooo. As soon as we got on the freeway, it was slow and go to I-40 from all that stadium traffic. Or so I thought. As we hit the junction for I-40, it slowed even more to a 4 lane crawl. The next 30 minutes were spent crawling down the freeway first from narrowing of lanes from road construction, then past an accident at Louisiana and I-40. Bah, humbug. Wouldn't have been so annoyed, except that a) I could have taken the other route and avoided all that, and b) I really had to pee. It felt very like our trip through Seattle on I-5 just two weeks ago.

We got to TR and Doug's at 5:15, and commenced having a jolly time. It was all Wilde Bunch folk there, since their social circle encompassed just that group and the c/w dancers. They have a quirky, fun home on 2 1/2 acres in the mountains, with a menagerie of mounted fake (?) animals around the house with names like "Lawrence Elk" and "Val Crow." Quite lovely guys. Doug had to raise his two (developmentally challenged) sons himself. They moved here a few years ago from having spend years and years in Seattle.

The food was followed by The Singing of Carols, quite joyously joined in by the 10 or so people there. TR is an accomplished musician and composers and attacked the music with verve.

We had to skedaddle before the Board Games portion of the evening so I could get back to work. We dashed back home in just 30 minutes. Wish we could have spent more time there!

It's snowing!

[edit, 10 hours later]

The snow lasted just a brief time, and the dusting we got was melted and evaporated by noon. Just some brisk breezes during the day and a promise of more rain/sleet tomorrow.
