Another close one
Jan. 23rd, 2009 12:33 pmSomehow I've been blessed with never having had a car accident of any sort in my 54 years. Knock on wood.
About this time last year, a woman drove right through a stop sign just mere feet from our house on a very frosty, icy day. Fortunately, I was driving less than 5 miles an hour, so missed hitting her by inches.
Last night, I was headed over to the Walmart parking lot to dump a load of glass in the city recycling bins*, since we don't have curbside recycling for that (yet).
I was a block further east of last year's near miss and about to pass through an intersection where the stop signs were in the crossing direction. I KNOW this intersection. People regularly run the signs. So, as usual, I slowed to 20mph and flashed my lights in case someone was coming up.
Someone came up to the stop sign on the right, but was stopping so slowly I kept my eye on them.
Suddenly a LARGE BLACK TRUCK with all their windows tinted so I couldn't even see the driver blasted through the stop sign to my left. Hitting the brakes HARD, the entire bin of glass came flying up from the back toward me, breaking several bottles. Shards flying everywhere.
And I missed hitting him by less than an inch.
I drove past then, and he gunned his truck onward. I figured he would have a gun, so I just circled back home, cleaned up the broken glass (which didn't hit me, but there was some scattered even on my dashboard), and gave up for the night.
The gawds are with me. For now.
* turns out the bins aren't there now. They've either gotten rid of them, or they were just out to go to the main recycling center.
