billeyler: (dancing bear)

I've known this for a very long time, but some exercise makes me feel better than no exercise at all. The past three days, I've taken walks between 15 minutes to 50 minutes, the latter being today. Tonight, I actually felt like I had energy!

Today was a gorgeous day, mid 40s and clear...the past few days, the temps have barely climbed above freezing if at all. The walk was much nicer; I trekked down to the local post office to drop some mail in the slot (the PO is 1 block from where I work), then wandered over to the next block where a bunch of 1920s homes (that had been converted into business long ago) had been moved away and a 1/2 block of new live/work 2 story buildings are about 50% done with construction.

This is the old neighborhood where I used to live, and seeing changes like this is always interesting. 3 of the old home/businesses had been moved to a 5 acre lot at the corner of Cornell and Silver to escape the wrecking ball. The original home on that lot was built in 1908 just after that area was platted, and although it's a wreck now, it seems to be protected from destruction (I hope). There wasn't another house in that area for at least another 20 years, so the old Werner-Gilchrist homestead must have been something to be there overlooking what would become UNM eventually. Unlike a lot of the old homes in Albuquerque, I've never read anything about the family or families that built the house. When we moved to that neighborhood in 1983, it was owned by a gay guy that I never met. It was abandoned for at least 10 years; hopefully if it doesn't burn down, it'll be (expensively of course) renovated.

Until recently, it was impossible to actually see the house, being completely overgrown with huge trees and shrubs as a couple of other old homesteads are along silver. Now, it just looks naked and vulnerable. Nearly all the old trees were cut down haphazardly, with 1 to 2 foot trunk stubs scattered over the otherwise barren land. This is the oldest remaining building near the university not actually on UNM land.

As [livejournal.com profile] abqdan described, we actually had a cooked breakfast together this morning, something we usually only reserve for our infrequent houseguests. We'd probably do this more, but on weekends Danny's usually already had his Raisin Bran and OJ by the time I crawl out of bed. We have to actually plan to have breakfast together, although we're generally pretty good about dinners. I was a bit surprised about the fire, but I realized it was all the debris in the drip-pan that had caught fire, so wasn't as concerned as he was.

The year comes to a close...we have an open house and a dance party to go to tomorrow, then we'll see how we do with ringing in the new year. Danny traded in his Monday AGORA shift for tonight so we can enjoy it together tomorrow.

Back to work on Wednesday, [livejournal.com profile] abqdan's birthday!
