No, wait...it wasn't a tour. And it was FOUR hours. Billy's big adventure today was summer-izing the evaporative cooler. It's nearly as good as new, for a piece of equipment that's 19 years old. Lots of marine sealant and tan spray paint is holding it all together. New faucet valves should help, too. No leaks that I can find!

It's actually in the icon...on the roof between the chimney and the flagpole.

Toasty warm in the sun...I'm sure some parts of my skin going to be complaining about that!

Three biggies:

- The cooler wall where the float valve was seated had rusted totally away this past year, so I had to figure out how to seat it. A large metal washer and two pieces of plastic cut from a cole slaw container did the trick.

- Installed a water treatment cylinder along the hose. Maybe this will help extend the life of the pad if there's not as much alkalinity pumped through the media.

- Replaced the filter media after EIGHT years finally. Yes, I was slothful about replacing it. The old media I put in back in 2000 was warranted for five years, but with our alkali water, it was in really bad shape in spite of cleanings I gave it over the years. I was a bit worried about the new media fitting, since the old style filter was obsolete and it wasn't clear on the box if this was really what I needed (from Lowe's). But fit it did with the addition of an inch of hard R-4 insulation on either side of the pads against the cooler walls. The cooler pad media is now $105 a box. Ack. It had better last five years!

Danny turned the cooler on a bit ago. As usual, a good amount of rusty gunk flew out the vent on the counters and the floor, but it's all vacuumed up now. I'm praying the cooler will hopefully last through the summer. It's supposed to be 80 today which is about the time to start using the cooler.

We'll be able to turn off the two humidifiers for the summer!

Now to go shower and get ready for the dinner/movie date in two hours with the Daves!

The drama isn't quite over yet. Danny reported at 7 when we all got back from a walk that the water was running out of the cooler, so we turned the tap off there until I can go up and fiddle with it again.

Yes, I'm not fond of them, either.
