One of the mental tricks suggested to hold down portion size is using smaller plates.

This past week, we've been having dinner on my 9" plates rather than the 11" plates. I think it DOES make a difference!

It better work or they'll be food spilling all over the table:) Seriously, it's a good idea. The other thing that works is to create a food journal. I kept one for four meals a day for four months ... and I lost 32 lbs. It helped me make better choices.
