Well, maybe the title doesn't apply.

Last week when the temperature plummeted to 8 degrees, Danny called the city animal protection agency and reported that the wolf/shepherd mix next door is virtually abandoned, with no shelter. Someone does come by and toss some dry food in a large bowl and the 25 gallon drinking "bowl" occasionally has the ice knocked out of it.

Hmmm...apparently an inspector (real police) went either on Thursday or Friday morning a left a note on their door that they had come by. Friday morning, Danny did see the Environmental Health van out there.

By noon, Danny called and said there was a scrawled note on a 3 x 3 piece of cardboard stuck on our side of the fence saying "This dog is NOT abandoned. A.H."

When I came home at 4:30, Danny was gone, I saw the Environmental Health van there again, but it was just pulling away as I drove up. When I got out of my car in the garage, I heard the caretaker yell VERY loudly (in my general direction), mooning over the dog "You're not abandoned are you Rocky...no, you're not! Mwah Mwah Mwah. Those Bad People reported you for nothing".

I got a bit angry.

I shouted back, "Who's that yelling at me? Show yourself!" Nothing happened.

So I went in the house, but saw that the Environmental Hazard van had just pulled up about 1/2 block, and was just across the street from our house. I traipsed over, and had a nice chat with them which helped my anger subside. Apparently the caretaker has a court date for animal negligence, although there was no sign of the mounds of frozen feces that were there earlier. he dog doesn't look well at all. Misfed with injuries. She was to build a shelter for the dog. I don't know if it's the owners dog or hers. The owners moved to Durango about two years ago, and the daughter that lived there for maybe 9 months is also long gone. They have an alarm system, bars on all the windows, and the house looks like a slum now. If it weren't empty, I'm sure it would be a crack house.

I saved the cardboard sign she put on our fence as evidence in case they start harrassing us. I'm going to record any conversations on my Palm, if they ever happen.

Well, except that there is now a hastily built doghouse in the back yard there, we haven't heard another peep, and Rocky is still looking like the unloved animal he is. At least he's not howling in loneliness like he did all summer.

Poor Rocky! I'm glad you and Danny are taking some responsibility for him. In the Chicago hinterlands we had some guy sentenced to prison for six years for abandoning some horses... too good for the bastard is what I say.
Good for you, Bill!
