Day 3 San Antone
Jun. 24th, 2006 09:00 pmWe didn't sleep in quite as late this morning.
As I was finishing LJ last night, Andy walked in declaring he was too tired for go honky tonky with the guys...and just after that Jerry Jestin called him on his cell asking if he was going out. Jerry always gravitates to us when we're around...I know what that's about, but I don't usually want to hang with him since there's usually a LOT of drinking involved. Anyway, we were in bed and probably asleep not too long after midnight.
Today was the final day of convention dancing. I've been tending to hang in the C1 hall more than anything else, since the quality of callers in there is generally VERY high. Mike Jacobs, Don Wood, Tim Crawford, and a host of others...although Tim was EXTREMELY mean to me, calling me the demon spawn from the devil...I don't know if he realizes I don't think it's as funny as he does.
A lot of wandering around today, and I did pick up a couple of records, but nothing much inspired me. My days of buying several records a month are long gone. I had chats with various other folks today. Scott Phillips from Portland (he's the vice chair of the A.R.T.S. group for some reason) and I dished about several people we know. Steve Edlund and I had a nice chat mostly about
airporter, who after 18 years is now taking over his youth dancing program. Sounds very exciting and he's very confident in Will's abilities there. I think Scott, Andy and I were there only openly gay folk there this weekend, although Andy says he ran into Robin Alpenglow (sp???) early on.
My three scheduled tips today went pretty well, although nothing special as far as I could tell. I did C1 30 minutes, Easy Mainstream in the big hall (following Marshall Flippo), then one last High Energy Mainstream in the gallery. Wandering back up to C1, I did one more unscheduled C1, and then danced a few more tips. I think the only C2 at all was the one short tip Betsy called on Thursday.
There was a Parade of States and closing ceremonies between 5 and 6:30, much like our Grand March. Except for the next few conventions coming up and the foreign countries, only one square of dancers is allowed for each STATE to march, since the logistics of having EVERYONE march would never work. There was still Plus going on during all this. I only watched a bit of the march, because there was tiered seating around that area (which was also a Mainstream hall the rest of the time) and every seat was taken all the way around...I just peeked through from one of the exit aisles. This was just before my scheduled time to call the last MS tip...amazingly we had several squares turn up.
After that, Clark dragged me over to the Contra hall, where a pretty decent contra band played nice jigs and reels for the evening. I made it through 4 contras/mixers, but my knee was feeling jiggy, so I headed up one last time for the C1 hall and danced softly until my knee just said, "go home." I had met one young woman whose badge said she was from Ruston Louisiana, where I went to college. I graduated the year before she was born. Eek!
After wandering back home, feeling peopled out, I thought a dip in the pool would be nice. I did hit the pool...for about 10 minutes. There were dozens of young screaming kids in it too, which didn't make for quality relaxation time. So dripping, I left back for the room and a shower and relaxation.
I may wander back over to the convention center one last time for an afterparty, which I haven't done yet. They aren't really parties....they're just more square dancing.
Booked my return on the airport shuttle, so all set to go!
