Writer's Block: It's cold outside

It's too cold when the effects of it root-kill beloved outdoor plants. :(

Otherwise, you know that Springtime will eventually come. Here in the mile-high desert climes of Albuquerque we have freezing weather normally from mid-November through late February. It's nothing like folks in the north have to withstand, but definitely too cold for low desert folk.

It's too cold when I'm not dressed for it.

I have been in places so cold that yes, water makes a cracking sound as it freezes when you pour it out and the shards hit the ground. I have gone caving in an abandoned quarry in February in New Hampshire, where in order to drive home we had to change out of our muddy/wet clothing (yep, all the way to the skin) and the most difficult thing about it was the layers had frozen and it was really hard to move. (The suit stood up by itself once I finally got out of it.) I have walked through glacial runoff for about five seconds, long enough to have that sensation that my bones are all being stabbed with frost-covered iron knives.

But I think the coldest I've ever been has been in Sunnyvale, California, where I was outside shivering for a long time because I didn't have a jacket, and then I discovered the inside of the house wasn't any warmer. The best thing about New England is that when it's cold out, the houses are warm.

Yeah, that was the least comfortable trip of all the caving trips I've been on. :-) We shoulda known. It WAS a "wet cave" and it WAS February, and everybody knows you don't climb into someone's car with cave mud all over you. What were we thinking??
