I read in the Entertainment Weekly that Andrew Gold had died of a heart attack on June 3 at age 59.

He was iconic as a musician and singer for me in my early 20s. It MAY have been my mild obsession with red-headed people then; I'm not sure. It was likely that his song "Lonely Boy" rang for me during my coming-out in 1978. But I did have two of his albums, and I played them a lot. His big claim to fame was "Thank You for being a Friend," the theme song from Golden Girls--everyone knows THAT song.

I wrote him a note on AOL about 2005 and told him how much I had enjoyed his music in the 70s. I'm sure that made us both feel old, but he responded back within the hour, thanking me.

It wasn't until about that time I knew that he had equally talented and somewhat famous parents, Marni Nixon and Ernest Gold. Movie fans will remember both of them well.

R.I.P. Andrew.

Especially at such a young age.

Right?

He was in treatment for renal cancer, was responding well, but his family thinks that might have exascerbated the heart attack.
