I'm having a brain blip at the moment remembering anything I did on Saturday.

But Friday night, "I am my own wife" was a well-done 1-man show by Hal Simons at the Vortex. I never think of him acting, since he's a choreographer and director, but he did a really good job getting the story across, working through the 35 different people noted in the show and carrying the accents. The 15 minute "Talk Session" was interesting, although one yak-hog thought he was the only one in the theatre and monopolized the discussion. Going in, I didn't realize the transvestite the story was centered around was a real person. Charlotta von Malsdorf...

Still trying to remember anything from Saturday! I remember Danny had his headache...

Sunday morning, I worked through putting together the 06-07 budget for the square dance center and satisfied myself we can at least break even, and not lose our butts. Because the numbers of square dancers have shrunk to about 10% of their peak in the mid-70s, the great square dance center that was built then only survives because we rent to outside dance groups now...iffy at best, since we're a 501(c)(7) org.

Two hours of grunt work in the garden clearing out all the dead stuff was worthwhile, but still, just maintenance. The garden is totally dead looking, although I see the first buds appearing on the new rose bushes I planted last year. There are a few tulip leaves peeking out here and there, that Sadie didn't eat in 1997 after I made the mistake of mixing blood meal in with the bulbs. I need to spend an entire week doing what I want to do with the garden, but who knows if that's going to happen.

Left at noon to head over to Corrales for the monthly ASDC board meeting...a treat, since Betty cooked up a nice meal that was more like an evening meal than the light lunch promised. And of course, Sheri brought pastries from her parents bakery, and I had to dig into those. Kris did fairly well keeping the 2 hour meeting directed, but the most humor was in our trying to take our annual group picture for the ASDC wall. If we'd ever plan ahead, we'd get someone to TAKE these pictures, rather than depending on a timer!

Rushed back home to pickup Danny up and dress for the Oscars party. This was a complete backtrack. Corrales was 30 minutes north of the house, then I had to drive back most of the same route and go another 20 minutes north into Rio Rancho. I'm sure it's cheaper up there to build, but Lee lives in such a REMOTE area of new development, it feels like a different country. Only the view of the Sandias convinced me we were still in New Mexico.

We did the usual oscar picking game...I was conservative and thought Brokeback would only get Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Was happy it got best Soundtrack, although that was unexpected, and I was somewhat internally disappointed Heath, Michelle, and Jake didn't get any nods...but I didn't truly expect it. About a dozen guys showed for this, mostly from the c/w group, so it was pleasantly festive, and of course we all made our catty remarks. I did 'win' a prize at the end for getting 12 of the oscar categories right...I usually suck at that!

And a long 50 minute drive back, we both immediately crashed in exhaustion.

And I still can't remember anything from Saturday!

[remembered something! I went to a Jerry Jestin A2 dance at the square dance center from 10 to noon!, then an abortive trip to Lowe's to order more blinds for downstairs. Guess the rest of the day was just noodling around at home!]

[remembered more! I had gotten up at 5am and noodled around for a couple of hours, so's not to disturb Danny...chatted for a while online with John Bauder in NY. THEN I went back for cuddle time with Danny and ended up sleeping again till almost 9:15! Showered and shaved and got the the square dance center with a minute or two to spare!]

Hope tonight was a good open house...Danny said it seemed like a good time. I think we had about 7 new folks, and I worked them through a number of fun routines, and added the Barn Dance and played with big circle/couple routines to get the beat going.

I'm rethinking how I want to approach open houses with brand new dancers. Trying to get away from the slam, bam of 'here's 10 new calls tonight, let me teach them, then throw them at you in any combination I want to, and see if you sink or swim' method to teaching whole dance sequences to get better flow and new dancer confidence. I'll work on that. They did a bang up job with Venus and Mars, something I'd normally never do on a first night.

Lots of energy, although mine was low. We had more than 3 squares up most of the time, and no one left in disgust. There was a lot of laughter and smiles and some general goofiness.

It's still a bit hard to shift gears from an intensive hour of workshopping C1, right into 2+ hours of easy-level, mainstream and plus dancing, with that added A2 star tip at the end.

But it somehow is working...for now.

Again, I'm concerned about what the board thinks should be happening. 6 of the 7 new folks are from the Thursday c/w group I have. The other one, was a Kris invite. The 'deal' is that the board is to do some sort of advertising for the new class, but I haven't a clue what that might have been.
