Where have all the sparrows gone?

For years, we've filled the bird feeder daily. Within a couple of hours, the feeder would be empty. Every season of the year, they'd be there. Often they'd be pecking away at it for hours even when it was completely empty.

About two weeks ago, they stopped coming.

What?

Yes, there are cats around, but there have been cats around ever since the last of the schnauzers died in 2004. That never seemed to stop them.

There's the occasional sparrow that picks at the food now and again. I've had to fill it exactly once in two weeks.

I hope there's no chemical reason for this hiatus.

I miss the birds.
