Last night, we invited Lawrence and Scott over for a glass of wine, then a dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant we hadn't been to before. My co-worker, Tram Nguyen (female, perky, totally Americanized, 27 and dating a 21 year old man*), recommended Pho #1 on San Pedro, over our regular May Cafe on Louisiana...

The reason for the invite was that we had bought tickets to "The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told," directed by my friend Hal Simons, and playing at the 430 seat Rodey Theatre in the same complex as the theatre where I work.

I'm not sure I'll try Pho #1 again. We ordered Vietnamese style milkshakes, me a Jackfruit Shake and Scott a Coconut Shake. They brought them BEFORE the meal, which is odd, since I thought it was dessert. Mine was really tasty, but Scott's tasted more like Cheerios in ice cream, so that was disappointing. We were half full though, with a surprisingly long wait for the meals.

The meals were all served individually...I mean, I got mine first, Lawrence 3 minutes later, Danny 3 minutes later, then finally Scott 4 minutes later...that seemed really bizarre. Mine came with the entire cilantro plant fresh from the garden on mine. Granted, I like cilantro, but there is such at thing as overkill! Apparently, according to the cute buffed Vietnamese guy waiting on us, most of the regular staff and customers were at Isleta Casino, because "it's seafood night at the buffet"...okay, I'm scared!

Anyway, the meal ended up being more protracted that I thought, and we arrived with our GENERAL ADMISSION TICKETS 3 minutes before curtain was supposed to go up. Oops! BAD mistake! We did all finally find seats, but since the show was totally sold out, we were all scattered over the theatre in single seats...since I was the one that hit the can beforehand, I ended up in the balcony area. Not bad seats, just not near the guys. Scott was in the first row, Lawrence and Danny had aisle seats each in row 4 and 5. Me, row 20 something, balcony. :(

The show started about 15 minutes late, but I have to say it was absolutely worth the odd restaurant prelude. Hal directed one of the best shows he's ever done, and he's done MANY Broadway-style shows over the years. Even with the audience tittering over the Adam and Steve nudity, the play was very even, uproariously funny where it needed to be, and filled with pathos in other places, mucho gay bitchiness where it was supposed to be. Pace and timing were tight. Standing ovations all around at the end.

Two of the actors we remembered from "Take Me Out" a few months ago...the character changes fit them to a T. They're holding up well, since this was performance 5 of 8 for that student show. This was Hal's Master's Thesis at UNM.

Hal IMed me this morning, saying he waited around after the show to meet up with us, but I had absolutely spaced it, and we all went home to bed!

Recommendation: 4 stars, especially at the $8/ticket staff rate!

* I told Tram a couple of weeks ago that the possibility of her boyfriend actually being gay was higher than normal. Men that haven't figured out they are gay yet often date women that are several years older than them. She's VERY concerned now! :-) Her boyfriend is a hunk, but absolutely REFUSED to go see a show with gay themes! Go figure!
