Deeeetroit City
Jul. 28th, 2005 11:30 amPacking tonight for the flyin in Detroit this weekend...flight is at 6:45 in the morning (yawn). This'll be the third flyin I've called for them...always feels like such an in and out thing there, and I haven't seen the city at all.
abqdan had to cancel out since our host has a non-hypoallergenic dog...sigh.
Looking forward to working with Ken Burke, one of their local callers. I met him briefly at the Nationals in Denver in '04. Seems like a hyper-active young guy (under 40?), and my memory of his spiky gelled hair definitely made him look out of the norm at a straight square dance event. Apparently he and his lovely wife Linda are great fun, from the reports from Grand Rapids. Ken will likely be one of the more popular straight callers overtaking the gay circuit soon, as word gets around. He seems to team up with Bobby Poyner, who is a popular straight caller over on the right coast and inlands...another caller that doesn't fit the mold of what square dance callers should be like.
Their flyin is themed around Diamonds, so I'll do my Diamond best. :-)

Date: 2005-08-01 08:44 pm (UTC)I did pass the Detroit Zoo exit sign on Woodward Avenue several times though. Does that count? Ferndale is actually a nice little 1930s or so burbia...
How did families live in 2 bedroom, 1 Bath houses with virtually no closets???? My host had one of those, and while it was spotless, modern, and gayed up to the 9s, it was tiny, tiny. There must be millions of little houses like that all over Detroit.
