Yesterday's twister

Tornadoes are REALLY rare in this part of the state.  This one is about 35 miles north of Albuquerque near I-25 as it goes up what's called "La Bajada ," a steep incline from 5,500 feet to 7,000 feet, up from Albuquerque level to the Santa Fe area cooler climate.

This didn't do any damage, but traffic was halted on the freeway for an hour until this and two other reported tornadoes would have dissipated.

Very interesting. It is hard to imagine that this occurred around La Bajada! You are right about tornadoes being rare. When I was in 6th grade, in Santa Fe, the principal came to my class room and called all of the students to the window, as this shell of a twister wobbled across the playground and almost did not make it through the chain-link fence. Now, if we were in tornado country, the principal would have had us all move away from the window -- if not to an internal hallway.

That's right...you probably know we desert folk go outside to watch when it starts raining, especially if there's thunder and lightning!

The prairie stormchasers would have been SO jealous, since 100s of people didn't have to go anywhere just to see this!

I saw the Wizard of Oz when I was 5 or 6, and ever since then, I've had tornado nightmares. Those things scare the CRAP out of me! Still, I've never seen one in person. It would've been cool...

It sure would have been interesting...I'm sure the folks on the freeway didn't even dream that something like that would be just a mile or so off the road when they were leaving Santa Fe.
