A couple of months ago, I decided to dump the 10-year-old scroungy-looking Pathos that had been in the stairwell planter and replace that with African Violets and something that looks like miniature Easter lilies when in bloom (I lost the tag!).

Along with the new plants, a refurbishing of the planter with rust-proofing and a fresh stone-like paint job and I'm much pleased with the results.

Wow, they look wonderful! Are African Violets easy to grow or are they picky (like ficuses) about light and water?

So far, they are easy. I know AVs are supposed to be picky plants, but they're getting great diffused sunlight from the skylight right over them, and I'm careful with the watering. The mini-lilies take more water than the AVs, and they wilt when they need water....so far, so good!

Guess I'm a risk taker for houseplants! :-)

Somehow I've kept a Poinsettia gift houseplant alive for three years. Right now it's in green/lush state with no red. We'll see what happens in the new year.

Just DON'T ask to see the Croton that's sickly and frail. I just put it in the front window to see if that perks it up.
