Last night, our friend we ordered the cabinets from  had his recommended main contractors come over to look over what will need to be done for the kitchen remodel.  Danny still wants a gas range (we have electric), but I think it's going to be prohibitively expensive to retrofit gas to the kitchen.  The cabinets will likely be delivered in six weeks, but that's a little early for our plans, so we may have them hold off another month, until after balloon fiesta.  We have lots of houseguests on the second week of the festival.

Danny walked them through the second part of the remodel, involving the two upstairs bathrooms and the master bedroom.

I got a call at 7:45 this morning.  The contractor arranged for a plumber and electrician to come by at 4pm on Thursday for an overview.

Hopefully, we'll get some quotes out of all this that we can live with.  The cabinets are expensive enough.

We seem to be moving forward after an 18 month hiatus from doing any reno!

You might want to consider induction rather than gas (although there aren't many induction ranges). However, induction might involve adding stuff to your electrical panel, so it might not be cheaper than gas for the install.

However, induction won't head up the room as much as gas when cooking.

We've just recently heard about induction, so we can ask about that. We have a new electrical panel installed 3 years ago as part of the upgrade, so we can talk to the electrician about that.

I'm seriously considering induction for our kitchen when we remodel: good control (like gas), but not as much wasted heat.

Also, you can actually put paper towels between the cooktop and the pan, saute something (without burning the paper towel), and then just toss the paper towel and you have a clean cooktop!

THAT is amazing. I'll have to read up on it! Danny says the cooktop for that is about $2,000 right now.

I had a gas line installed in my kitchen because I really hated cooking with electricity. It was sort of pricy (about $500.) but it was so worth it. They ran a line from my main gas line around the outside of the house and directly through the wall into the kitchen.
There's always propane :<)

That's one of the possibilities to get gas in. We'd have to run the line from the meter about 60 feet around house. There's an old gas pipe that was installed by the water faucet, just a few feet from the kitchen, but they said that was installed for a (non-existant) outdoor BBQ and the pipe would likely be too small.

You're moving right along. When will you start the demolition? As of last weekend we have no kitchen. As of today we have no roof. I guess that's progress...

no roof???? yikes! That would be scary!

Danny wants to rip out the double oven from the wall on Friday so we can see easily if there is a gas hookup. We'll see. Since we're not actually planning to start work until mid October (although our loan is closing tomorrow!), I hadn't anticipated not being able to use the ovens until then!

Our double ovens are sitting in the garage. We're trying to sell them but so far no interest. We, like Mark & Tim, are considering induction. Biggest issue for us is we're not convinced it's a good cooking method for woks. Then again, induction cooking has been used for years and years in China. They must know something.
