What were they thinking?

Many thousands of people live within a couple of miles of Isotopes Park, the baseball park in the sports complex that's part UNM-own, part city-owned.  We're two of those thousands of people.

It's summertime.  Most people have their windows open at night here since not many use refrigerated air.  It was a beautiful night for sleeping.  Calm, clear and cool.

Last night, they had a baseball double-header at the park.   I could hear the crowd noise bouncing off our garage door very late.  Much later than they normally end about 10pm.  The games apparently ended at 12:10am.  On a Sunday morning.

How did I know that?  Because right then started fifteen minutes of amazingly loud fireworks that must have awakened every person in a five mile area, including every dog and cat that gets spooked by loud noises.

I was stunned by how inconsiderate it was for that to be allowed.   What about all the noise regulations the city has on the books?

Letters will be written; phone calls will be made.   We're sorely NOT impressed.

[edit:  I assumed it was a double header.  Apparently it was a 'twelve-inning nail-biter"]

I had that happen one Sunday... I live 4-or-so blocks from a high school athletic field, which has constructed a covered bleacher that creates a megaphone pointed at and level with my house, across a valley.........

Usually I can ignore it, but once they let some wannabe DJ use a microphone for 14 HOURS STR8!

I called after about 9 hours, leaving a message that I was annoyed, and left my name, but not my number.

A few weeks later an assistant vice-principal called, asking if I was the complainant, and if I wanted to discuss this..... what's to discuss?!?!?!?

I'm just stunned with all the layers of bureacracy laid down for dealing with noise abatement, that this happens. Football games, outdoor events, baseball games. It's no wonder the entire neighborhood within a couple of miles continues a downward slide.

I feel very bad for the folks that live a few hundred feet from the stadium.

Cities kiss the asses of sports teams, because they bring in revenue. Plain and simple.

Another thing that aggravates me about this cow-towing, is the impact this has on rush hour! My commute takes at least twice as long on home team days, as does everyone else's who has to use any streets within 10 blocks of the stadium, and miles, on the ones that pass by it!

Does the city do ANYTHING to alleviate this? HAH!

We were still awake when the fireworks went off, but were surprised and unhappy at that much noise that late at night.

Danny wrote to our Ray Garduno (city counselor?), who immediately contacted the managers of Isotopes Park. They had a back and forth going, with some mild appeasement.
