Dance tidbit
Apr. 8th, 2006 08:38 amAn interesting development in the Thursday C/W lessons...in the past month, we've gotten a small group of three people that are deaf dancing with us, with one hearing person signing ASL for teaching as I'm talking. I've started pausing in between teaching sentences a bit to accomodate this. Roger in particular is a VERY good dancer and picks it up quickly; he's a cute youngish bear type that I had met online maybe six years ago but hadn't heard much from. Another I've seen for way over 15 years out at the bar, but he's making his first attempts to couples and line dance...I think he has about 5% hearing.
Rather than the cowboy types you'd think would come to the dance lessons, we have a full spectrum of ages, races, and types. A LOT of women now, too. It's all pretty invigorating! I'm so happy I made this decision to teach last July.
One of the nice things about this dance form is that someone can just come occasionally, no pressure to learn 70 calls to get through a program. We still have the core group of 15 or so that faithfully comes, a couple of them from Santa Fe.
Lots of them have made friends with each other and some have started dating. Ah, the romance of couples dancing.
