After I got back from work tonight, I did my tour of the garden to check on the drip system.

Looking over the back fence, I was a bit stunned.

There was a fresh mound of dirt next to the wall next to our yard, with a dog collar placed on it on it.

The neighbors apparently buried Rocky there.

Don't know what to say about that. Right now, that is.

Oh ouch. I guess at least Rocky is no longer suffering.

That's very true. I've never seen a more unloved dog than that. Ever.

The day after the Environmental Health guy came by and had the meeting with the 'caretaker', I was driving back from the store and saw the granddaughter and her boyfriend (?) actually WALKING Rocky up the street. He had never been out of the yard in the 4 years he was here. He was hobbling and didn't look like he knew where he was. He wasn't really walking at all. Danny saw it too a bit later. After that, we've never saw the dog or another soul at the house.

There is a LARGE RV parked in the front yard most of the year. This past weekend, while we were in Denver, it disappeared, but today it's back. And now there is the large mound by the back fence where the dog is obviously buried.

The irony is that the previous owners of THIS house buried their dog by the back fence on OUR side in 1991 before they sold the house. There's a headstone there even now: "Duke, the Wonder Dog, 1978-1991." A couple of the Algermissen children came by about 7 years ago to visit the spot. They must have loved their dog.

Rocky is buried loosely in a dusty, weed-strewn side yard. His bowl of dry dog food from a month ago is still standing where it was...and bits of it are strewn around from the birds and from where he had left bits when he was better. It hasn't rained since then, and it's all fully intact, as is the strewn-about feces piles further out.

Can we say bizarre neighborly behavior?

Ugh. Bizarre indeed, and awful as well - the animal lover in me wants to beat them up on Rocky's behalf. Not that it would help anyone or anything except my spleen. :-(

beat them up on Rocky's behalf. Can I join you? I'll bring a bat, club, and implements to badly splint any bones that may fracture.

Excuse me for a minute. Damn, damn, damn!

Well, I knew that Rocky was unloved and neglected. He was left to stand guard on an empty house for 23 hours a day (sometimes longer) with no companionship, dog or human. It took us quite a while to get him to the point where he'd come over to the fence and accept a dog treat from us through the wire fencing. That was the most love he received in his short life. So, it was no surprise that he fell ill and died at the hands of uncaring humans.

What did annoy me was that having reported his condition twice on a Friday to the animal welfare department, they didn't show up for TWO DAYS. And then just left a note on the door. It was obvious the dog was suffering and in need of medical attention, but our city council doesn't have enough money to properly staff the animal welfare department. It did find a few million to spend on celebration of Albuquerque's 300th anniversary though. Good to know we have our priorities right.
