After I got back from work tonight, I did my tour of the garden to check on the drip system.

Looking over the back fence, I was a bit stunned.

There was a fresh mound of dirt next to the wall next to our yard, with a dog collar placed on it on it.

The neighbors apparently buried Rocky there.

Don't know what to say about that. Right now, that is.

Ugh. Bizarre indeed, and awful as well - the animal lover in me wants to beat them up on Rocky's behalf. Not that it would help anyone or anything except my spleen. :-(

beat them up on Rocky's behalf. Can I join you? I'll bring a bat, club, and implements to badly splint any bones that may fracture.

Excuse me for a minute. Damn, damn, damn!

Well, I knew that Rocky was unloved and neglected. He was left to stand guard on an empty house for 23 hours a day (sometimes longer) with no companionship, dog or human. It took us quite a while to get him to the point where he'd come over to the fence and accept a dog treat from us through the wire fencing. That was the most love he received in his short life. So, it was no surprise that he fell ill and died at the hands of uncaring humans.

What did annoy me was that having reported his condition twice on a Friday to the animal welfare department, they didn't show up for TWO DAYS. And then just left a note on the door. It was obvious the dog was suffering and in need of medical attention, but our city council doesn't have enough money to properly staff the animal welfare department. It did find a few million to spend on celebration of Albuquerque's 300th anniversary though. Good to know we have our priorities right.
